How Wellborn Cabinets Inc. Started

Wellborn Cabinets history

It’s not often that you hear about a cabinet-making company that has a well-rounded construction background, but that’s exactly how Morgan Wellborn got his start. All through the Florida panhandle clear up to Alabama and Georgia in the early 1940s and 50s, Morgan supported his family by building and remodeling homes. After all, this was a period that saw many major upswings in American living and culture after the Second World War.

Morgan also taught his two sons the construction craft which was booming in popularity for many Florida-based homes. By 1957, Morgan’s two sons Doug and Paul had already completed their very first kitchen remodel in Pensacola, Florida on their own. The family decided to move back to Morgan’s home state of Ashland, Alabama in 1959 and continued locally in the remodeling field.

Morgan stuck to remodeling while Doug and Paul created all the cabinets for each job their dad was working. Across the street from their home stood a small building that wasn’t more than 20’ x 40’ in size, and served as their earliest workshop. At night they would construct cabinets and then they would install them during the daytime hours. As business slowly and steadily increased, their father bought 6 acres of old cotton field land to expand their business in 1961.

With this new land, Morgan built and opened his service station store for remodeling and meeting customers. Two years later, his sons built an additional cabinetry shop next to their Dad’s store. Ironically, this same location (and manufacturing facility) is much bigger now but is still in operation to this day. Although they operated under the name Country Cupboard Kitchens by Wellborn in 1961, they changed this name in the 80s to Wellborn Cabinets Inc.

By contrast, what started as a small side business for Doug and Paul working for their Dad from a 20′ x 40′ workshop has now evolved into a 2.2 million square foot cabinet construction compound that is located on the original 6 acres of land that their Dad had bought in 1961. Paul went on to be the sole owner of the company in 1986 and is a thriving industry that even includes a daycare center, fitness center, medical clinic, on-site chapel, and cafeteria.

They put a lot of emphasis on family-centered care for their 1,300 employees who all live in Ashland, Alabama.

Wellborn’s Cabinetry And Products

It’s nice to know that Wellborn’s product range is well-rounded with several types of cabinet styles which can include frameless or framed cabinet doors. They didn’t skimp on the selection of door frames either and offer over 200 styles to select from. The main reason we selected Wellborn as one of our top cabinet manufactures in the country is because of their wide selection. Although they keep up with the times and include plywood construction or MDF materials to construct their cabinets, they further offer real wood materials including cherry, oak, maple, hickory, and walnut.

They also have many finishes that are added to produce the appropriate look for all of their cabinet styles. This further involves stains, glazes, paints, and distressed touches. As far as design style, they also feature everything from modern designs as well as more traditional and classic cabinet styles. They make cabinets look and feel as custom as possible with their You-Draw-It ordering options that allow you to further customize cabinets not shown in their catalog.

Wellborn includes such a wide range of semi-custom cabinets and lines including their Premier and Estate Series that it’s not hard to imagine slight finishing touches that make any order feel completely customized in the end.

About Their Reputation

The cabinet industry is built by supporting cabinet manufacturers that show incredible attention to detail and construction quality, but it takes something special to gain a strong reputation. Wellborn Cabinets Inc. has not only won awards at the KBIS 2021 Best of Show expo for their Aspire Cabinet line but also their practices of sustainability and adopting advanced technology practices.

Their manufacturing compound is so advanced that they include VR training programs for employees who can paint cabinets using virtual reality headsets without any loss to their materials. They regularly host 3-day training sessions with various dealers and design centers on how their products are designed and built likewise. They had further provided their services to government HUD-funded projects for low-income families.

Wellborn has a reputation that places value on education, families, and quality-made cabinets.

It’s not enough that their amazing 70-year family legacy is still on the rise, but that their company deeply cares about modern functional cabinetry in a sustainable world. If you’re looking for cabinets that look and feel custom made for less than what you’d expect to pay for custom cabinets, Wellborn is a sold choice.
