Welcome to the Arabian Green Project
Small Space, Big Transitional Style in Phoenix, AZ
Featuring a charming transitional kitchen nook nestled in the Arabian Green Community of Phoenix.
This case study dives into the nitty-gritty of how we transformed a traditional U-shaped kitchen into an inviting, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space that meets contemporary tastes while retaining a cozy vibe.
Design Elements and Features
The Foundation: Cabinets and Countertops
The backbone of any kitchen lies in its cabinetry and countertops, and we didn’t cut any corners here. We chose cream painted, raised panel cabinets to envelop both the kitchen and island. This choice keeps the space feeling light and airy while adding a touch of elegance.
The island and kitchen countertops each feature different types of quartz—Silestone for the main kitchen counters and Cambria for the island. The latter provides an extra “pop” with its intricate patterns, making it the room’s focal point.
Backsplash and Appliances
We opted for a simple glass sheet pattern for the backsplash to keep the aesthetic clean and modern. Stainless steel appliances were a no-brainer; they are not only durable but also add a sleek, contemporary feel to the kitchen. The result? A space that feels both timeless and up-to-date.
Making the Most of a Small Space
Layout and Storage Solutions
The traditional small U-shaped layout posed a challenge, but we saw it as an opportunity to get creative. Endless storage was a must, so we wrapped upper and lower cabinets around the entire U-shaped walls. This design not only maximizes storage but also keeps everything within easy reach.
To further open up the space, we installed a large window above the kitchen sink, bathing the entire room in natural light. This feature alone makes the kitchen feel bigger and more welcoming.
Lighting and Flooring
For the lighting, we swapped out old can lights for modern inset lighting. It’s a small change that makes a big difference, giving the kitchen a refreshing, updated look.
Dark brown wood-like floors provide a warm contrast to the light cabinets and countertops, grounding the space and adding a touch of coziness.
A Functional and Inviting Space
The Island
One of the standout features of this kitchen is the narrow but long island. Half of it serves as a workspace with cabinets below, while the other half offers seating with no cabinets underneath. This design creates an open, inviting area in the center of the kitchen—perfect for everything from meal prep to casual dining.
Modernizing While Maximizing Space
Our client wanted to modernize their kitchen without sacrificing functionality. Mission accomplished. We incorporated plenty of countertop space, including a range gas oven with a narrow wall-mounted hood to make the most of every inch. The result is a kitchen that not only looks good but also works hard for its occupants.
Transformative Impact
We were able to completely transform this tiny U-shaped kitchen into a central part of the home where the client genuinely enjoys spending time. The combination of smart design choices, functional elements, and a hint of modern flair has created a space that’s as functional as it is beautiful.
Conclusion
In the end, this project was all about blending style with functionality to create a kitchen that meets the client’s needs and exceeds their expectations. From the chic cabinetry to the innovative island design, every element was carefully chosen to achieve a harmonious balance between modern and transitional styles.
