A Blend of Transitional and Desert Contemporary Styles

Welcome to a Desert Transitional Kitchen – Scottsdale, AZ

Located in the heart of Scottsdale, the Grayhawk kitchen is a perfect blend of transitional and desert contemporary styles.

When our client approached us with the vision for their new kitchen, we knew this would be a unique and exciting project. They were looking for a space that was not only functional but also exuded warmth and elegance, making it the centerpiece of their home. Let’s take you on a tour of this stunning transformation.

Layout and Functionality

The original layout was a traditional small U-shaped kitchen. While this design is efficient for cooking, storage was a bit of a challenge. To address this, we introduced beige walls with a mosaic subway tile backsplash that added a touch of sophistication and warmth.

One of the standout features of this kitchen is the two-toned shaker cabinets. We opted for cream-colored uppers that brighten the space, paired with custom wood-stained bases that add depth and contrast. This combination strikes a balance between traditional elements and contemporary materials, embodying the essence of transitional design (click for more on transitional design).

The countertops are an earth-tone quartz that complements the cabinetry perfectly. Durable and stylish, these countertops are as practical as they are beautiful. The multi-colored glass sheet backsplash brings an additional layer of texture and color, tying all the elements together seamlessly.

Innovative Solutions

Our client had a special request for a bar area but didn’t have the space within the kitchen’s confines. We got creative by transforming the desk nook into a cozy bar space. This new space features white glass window upper cabinets and white bottom drawer cabinets, all adorned with the same mosaic subway tile backsplash from the kitchen. A wine fridge completes this nook, making it the perfect spot for entertaining.

For additional storage, we installed large pantry cabinets that extend from the floor to the top of the soffit, right next to the fridge and in-wall ovens. This clever use of space ensures ample storage while keeping everything within easy reach. Although this storage area isn’t technically part of the U-shaped kitchen, it’s conveniently located just outside, adding to the overall functionality.

Aesthetic Touches

The desert contemporary design is all about blending traditional warmth with modern sleekness, and we achieved this through thoughtful color choices and materials. The beige walls set a neutral backdrop, allowing the cabinetry and countertops to shine. The mosaic subway tile backsplash isn’t just eye candy—it adds a tactile element that invites you to touch and feel the quality craftsmanship.

The use of long white cabinets and dark brown lower cabinets creates a visual balance that’s both inviting and elegant. The bar nook, with its glass window cabinets, not only serves a functional purpose but also adds a chic touch to the overall design. And let’s not forget the wine fridge—because what’s a luxurious kitchen without a dedicated space for your favorite vintages?
